The 7 Things You Don’t Need to Get Organized

Want to get organized? Here’s what you don’t need to add to your list.

If you’re looking to transform your clutter and chaos into calm and order, odds are you are frantically searching the Internet and bookstores looking for all the tips, ideas, and inspiration you’ll need to get the job done.

I applaud your efforts and your desire!

But I’m afraid in your quest to discover what you do need, you may be missing out on some key information. Namely, all the things you don’t need.

The 7 things you don’t need to get organized:

While it’s important to have the right tools to help you declutter, make decisions, and set up systems, there are 7 things you don’t need to get organized:

  1. You don’t need a lot of time. While having a few hours to work undistracted will allow you to make a dent in your clutter, don’t fret if your schedule doesn’t allow it. Working 5 minutes every day can make a big difference!

  2. You don’t need a lot of equipment. Despite the commercials and glossy magazine photos, you don’t need to purchase a lot of containers or have fancy labels to bring order to your space.  You can use the containers you already have, or you can get creative and repurpose other items in your home to create order.

  3. You don’t need a negative vocabulary.  Remove the words, “I can’t” and “I don’t know” from your vocabulary before you ever start the organizing process. You’ll get further with your efforts if you work from a positive outlook rather than a negative one.

  4. You don’t need to get rid of everything.  Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to purge everything in your life. Evaluate each item you own and ask yourself if you love it, use it regularly, and have a suitable home for it. If you answer yes to those 3 criteria then by all means, keep it!

  5. You don’t need to do it like everyone else. Thanks to social media we have a false idea of what “organized” should look like.  Honestly, when it comes to getting organized, just do you. Order your space according to your style, your needs, and your preferences and don’t worry about everyone else.

  6. You don’t need it to be perfect. There is no such thing as “perfectly organized”. It doesn’t exist so please stop striving for it. Set up systems that work for you and allow you to have the peace and order you long for. Trust me, it’s enough.

  7. You don’t need to feel like a failure if the clutter returns. The truth is, clutter can come back. There may be a multitude of reasons why it happens, but whatever the reason, it doesn’t mean you failed. You may need to refine your systems, do some more decluttering or build better habits. It’s only failure if you give up.

There you have it. All the things you don’t need to get organized! Aren’t you glad they aren’t necessary? Now, with those things out of the way, you can start bringing order to your home and life. Go for it!!
